The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: A big court date

A living civics lesson played out on the Colorado Mesa University campus Wednesday when, for the first time in its 89-year history, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments in western Colorado.

It was a rare chance to observe an important part of the federal judicial process that isn’t widely known or understood.

There are 13 appellate courts that sit below the U.S. Supreme Court. U.S. courts of appeals are considered among the most powerful and influential courts in the United States because they can set legal precedent in regions that cover millions of Americans.
