The Denver-based conservative nonprofit Compass Colorado has added a new blade to its liberal meat grinder.

Adam Johnson, a politico who’s been around the Colorado block, this week became the communications director for the firm led by well-known political commentator Kelly Maher, its executive director.

“AJ has been a friend and colleague for over 15 years,” Maher said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have him on board. We’re getting the band back together.”

Compass Colorado gravitates to opposing “higher taxes, drastic spending increases, unsustainable debt and government overreach,” it says on its website. Mostly it’s known for Maher’s ability to turn a clever phrase in the press.

Johnson first worked on the re-election team for the last Republican governor, Bill Owens, in 2002 and worked on more than a dozen campaigns since.

Last year he was named the Colorado state director for the Republican National Committee.

A fourth generation Coloradan, the firm says he has a “command of grassroots organizing and messaging.”

“He brings this knowledge to help inform his fellow Coloradans of the issues and stances which will impact their lives the most,” Compass Colorado said in an email making the announcement Tuesday.
