Mitsch Bush launches TV ad in 3rd CD Democratic primary

Diane Mitsch Bush joined primary rival Karl Hanlon on the 3rd Congressional District’s airwaves and cable wires Monday as the Democrat unveiled a TV ad touting her stance on issues and several prominent endorsements.

Mitsch Bush, a former state lawmaker from Steamboat Springs, is facing Hanlon, a Carbondale rancher and water attorney, as well as former Eagle County Commissioner Arn Menconi, the Green Party’s 2016 nominee for Colorado’s U.S. Senate seat, in the June 26 Democratic primary for the seat held by U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, a four-term Republican.

“As a county commissioner and a state House representative, Diane fought to protect our environment, our public lands and our water,” an announcer says in the 30-second ad. “She championed public education and affordable, quality health care for all.”

The ad also notes that Mitsch Bush has won endorsements from former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, former U.S. Sen. Mark Udall and former Gov. Bill Ritter.

County clerks started mailing ballots to voters Monday. For the first time, Colorado voters registered as unaffiliated can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary without having to register with a party.

A spokesman for Mitsch Bush’s campaign said the ad is set to air in all four of the TV markets that cover the district – Denver, Grand Junction, Colorado Springs/Pueblo and the Albuquerque market, which reaches parts of southwestern Colorado.

Kyle Feuer, the campaign’s director of communications, said the ad is initially scheduled to run for one week with hopes to extend it through the primary as fundraising permits.

Hanlon kicked off his TV ad campaign last week with three ads set to run through the primary.

The sprawling district covers most of the Western Slope, Pueblo County and the San Luis Valley.

Since he unseated Democrat John Salazar in 2010, Tipton hasn’t faced any nail-biters in his runs for re-election, but a poll commissioned by progressive groups last month showed the incumbent in a statistical tie with an unnamed Democrat in a hypothetical match-up.
