WOODLAND PARK -Mayor Neil Levy won re-election Tuesday night over City Councilman Val Carr, marking the end of a contentious campaign.

Realtor Hilary LaBarre and former city Finance Director Kelly Case were elected to the City Council, receiving 1,058 and 1,201 votes, respectively, according to unofficial preliminary results released by City Clerk Suzanne Leclerq.

But the fate of the third open council seat was too close to call as of 9 p.m. Incumbents Noel Sawyer and John Schafer got 994 and 996 votes, respectively, while challenger Mark Maruszak had 982 and George Jones had 884. Of the 2,205 ballots cast, 25 had not been counted.

Levy, who was appointed mayor in 2014 and elected in 2016, won 1,183 votes, besting his opponent by 176 votes.

Dozens of Levy supporters crowded his Swiss Chalet restaurant, and cheered and applauded with glasses in hand as the first round of results was revealed.

“I’m thankful for the support and look forward to making Woodland Park a great place to live,” he told The Gazette. “We have a great group of people on City Council that have worked together to accomplish some great things. Hopefully we can continue to do that.”

“The community won,” said Tony Perry, one of Levy’s campaign managers.

During Levy’s tenure, the city completed several multi-million dollar projects, including a new aquatic center and renovations to Memorial Park.

His critics argued that the projects were financially mismanaged and that he too often sided with longtime City Manager David Buttery, who in December announced plans to retire. The new City Council will choose his replacement.

Carr said he was disappointed but declined to comment further.
