Pueblo City Council took a positive step on March 26 by passing a new ordinance that will make trash service mandatory. Starting on April 25, city code will require property owners or occupants to hire regular trash service or, in the alternative, provide dump slips or other proof that trash is being removed at least every seven days.

After months of wrangling over mandatory trash collection, the city has taken a step forward that will necessitate strong enforcement by code officers.

A contract, invoice or receipt for hiring a trash service is the most direct way of showing proof of complying with the new ordinance. The alternative – a dump slip or other proof by those who handle their own trash disposal – may be the biggest challenge to enforcement. The important thing is to achieve the ultimate objective of making our neighborhoods and business districts assets that don’t mar Pueblo’s landscape.
