The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel: Let’s make sure energy is the icing, not the cake
Thursday’s announcement that Fram Operating LLC’s oil project in Whitewater has cleared its final hurdle is welcome news for a county that’s still fighting its way out of a decade-long economic slump.
At its peak in 2008, the county’s workforce included nearly 12,000 more workers than today. While things are obviously better now than they were in the lingering aftermath of the Great Recession, Mesa County still faces a stiff challenge – to replace the jobs that disappeared with new ones that pay well.
Fram’s plan to drill 108 oil wells from 12 pads certainly fits the bill. Construction and year-round production will provide about 70 jobs over the anticipated 20-year life of the project, the Bureau of Land Management said.
