The Pueblo Chieftain: Fort Carson fire response

Fort Carson needs to bring stronger, more urgent response measures to bear on future wildfires like the blaze that flared up in the Midway area over the weekend during live training at the Army base.

The fire, first detected last Friday, consumed about 3,300 acres of land and took out numerous structures before it was fully contained and an evacuation order was lifted in affected El Paso and Pueblo County subdivisions on Sunday. It’s good news that no loss of life or injuries were reported over the three days. It could have been worse.

Fort Carson Garrison Commander Ron Fitch said a fire started on a training range during standard exercises and apparently joined an earlier Hanover area flare-up ignited by a vehicle fire.
