Colorado state Rep. Steve Lebsock of Thornton on Tuesday lost his chairmanship of the House Local Government Committee in a shake-up of committee assignments announced by Speaker of the House Crisanta Duran of Denver.

Democrats, which have a majority in the chamber, controls committee assignments.

The Thornton lawmaker, who is under investigation for sexual misconduct, will be replaced as chair on local government by Rep. Jonathan Singer of Longmont.

Rep. Paul Rosenthal of Denver, who was cleared of sexual misconduct charges because the allegation occurred before he was a lawmaker, also was stripped of his role as vice-chair of the same committee.

Duran has taken fire for appointing Lebsock as chair of the local government committee last year, even after she knew about the allegations of sexual misconduct against Lebsock.

Rep. Tony Exum of Colorado Springs will take over as vice-chair of local government.

Rep. Faith Winter of Westminster will become the new chair of the House Transportation and Energy Committee, replacing Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush, who resigned from the General Assembly to run for the Third Congressional District seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton of Cortez. Replacing Winter as vice-chair will be Rep. Barbara McLachlan of Durango. Rep. Dylan Roberts of Eagle, who was appointed to replace Mitsch Bush, also joins that committee.

Roberts is also being appointed to the House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee. Its new vice-chair is Rep. Daneya Esgar of Pueblo, who replaces Mitsch Bush. Rep. Dominique Jackson of Aurora replaces Lebsock on that committee.

Lebsock told Colorado Politics that he’s served on local government and ag committees for past five years.

“The Speaker has chosen to remove the Democrat who’s served the longest on the ag committee,”  Lebsock said.  “I continued to serve on those committees even after Winter made her ‘false allegations’ (that) were reported to the speaker and majority leader.”

“House committee leadership and majority caucus appointments are at the sole discretion of the Speaker of the House,” according to a statement from Duran’s office.
