Former top White House strategist Steve Bannon recently met with former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo, to discuss a potential run for governor in 2018 by Tancredo.

Since leaving the White House and returning to run Breitbart.com, Bannon has made it clear he intends to recruit a deeply conservative class of candidates who would likely be seen as existing outside the Republican establishment to run for a variety of state and federal offices.

Tancredo represented state’s 6th congressional district for five terms, and ran on a hard line of immigration reform as a presidential candidate in 2008, and thus would presumably check off numerous boxes for Bannon.

The former congressman has had a rocky history with the Republican party. He ran for governor as a member of the American Constitution Party in 2010, and after re-registering as a Republican, he failed to win the party’s nomination in a 2014 bid. In 2015, he again left the Republican party, and said the GOP had become a “transparently dishonest charade[.]”

“Ok. What the hell. He [Bannon] is here and yes we met,” Tancredo confirmed to the Denver Post via email. “Fascinating guy. No idea what else his plans are here or frankly, what brought him here. But you know he is my boss at Breitbart!” Tancredo frequently writes editorials for Breitbart.

When asked if a gubernatorial run was discussed, the Post reported that Tancredo emailed back with a smiley-faced emoji, saying, “Come to think of it, I believe it came up.”

Colorado’s current governor, John Hickenlooper, is term-limited out of office next year, which has invited a wide number of entrants already, including current Congressman Jared Polis on the Democrat side, and Republican George Brauchler, a district attorney known for prosecuting James Holmes for the Aurora Theater shooting of 2012.

The Post report also cited “one local Republican operative” who said Bannon was talking to other potential candidates in Colorado.
