EPA chief’s Colorado travel questioned in CBS News report

A privately chartered flight from Denver to Durango for Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt last month was among the pricey trips by Trump administration officials called into question in a report this week by CBS News. CBS reported that Pruitt had been offered a seat on Gov. John Hickenlooper’s state airplane but declined.

The occasion was a tour by Pruitt and top Colorado officials – including the governor, U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner, and 3rd Congressional District U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton – of the Gold King Mine, site of an environmental disaster two years ago.

The news network looked into other travel by Pruitt that included a trip to Italy for an international summit that didn’t start until three days later, and a flight from Cincinnati to New York’s JFK Airport on an Air Force jet costing $20,000 on the public’s tab as opposed to a $350 commercial flight.

CBS doesn’t say how much it cost for Pruitt to book the private plane to Durango, but the EPA told the network the agency chief had no choice:

An EPA spokesperson told CBS News that Pruitt chartered the plane “after his flight was significantly delayed in order to ensure that he did not miss a critical meeting,” and ethics officials were consulted.
