The Loveland Reporter-Herald editorial: Look at fixes to migrant worker visa program
There are more-productive ways to address the problem of illegal immigration into the United States from south of the border than to build a wall. Better gateways would help.
One way is to make it simpler and less expensive for farmers to hire workers through the H-2A Visa program, a program that can be costly and cumbersome, thereby make the hiring of illegal workers a more attractive option.
While this seasonal farm worker program is designed to protect the workers who come here — such as pay guarantees, housing provided by the employer, and coverage for travel expenses — many farmers who need these workers have complained for years that the requirements are burdensome. In addition to the previously mentioned guarantees, the H-2A program strictly limits when period when workers may stay to work.
