Governor’s race picks up a Romney family member, Denver businessman Doug Robinson

Doug Robinson is the latest Republican candidate to enter next year’s governor’s race. Besides his involvement with Colorado’s GOP,  his uncle is former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

He told Colorado Politics Tuesday morning that Colorado had given him and his family a good life since they moved here from Michigan 20 years ago, and now he wants to give back.

“This has been the place that made our lives possible — to have professional success, to spend time with our kids and enjoy the great outdoors,” Robinson told Colorado Politics. “… I’m selfish in that I want Colorado to continue to be the kind of a place where my kids and grandkids would want to move to,” he said.

Robinson briefly considered a run for U.S. Senate last year, but dropped out early. He chaired his uncle’s 2012 White House hopeful’s campaign in Colorado was a Colorado delegate to the 2008 Republican National Convention.

He co-founded St. Charles Capitol in Colorado 10 years and sold it to KPMG in 2014. He stayed on as managing director until he retired two weeks ago.

John Frank of the Denver Post was the first to report Robinson’s candidacy and family relationship Tuesday morning.

Robinson enters a fast-growing field. The GOP primary already includes former state Rep. Victor Mitchell and Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler. State Treasurer Walker Stapleton and Attorney General Cynthia Coffman also are considering bids. Businessman Kent Thiry also is considering entering the GOP race this summer.

The Democratic side includes U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter, former state Sen. Mike Johnston, former State Treasurer Cary Kennedy, former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Eric Underwood and Denver businessman Noel Ginsburg.

On his new Twitter account, Robinson posted Tuesday, “I’ll do everything to guarantee that the CO we are building is the best possible future for the next generation.”
