The Loveland Reporter-Herald editorial: Speak up to defend public lands
U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah stirred controversy last week as he introduced a bill that would have transferred 3.3 million acres of public land in Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon and Wyoming to the states.
But within days he withdrew the proposal, moved by strong opposition from the public.
Chaffetz originally said he felt the land in question, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, does not serve the taxpayers.
That was news to the people who do use it. The land is leased for oil, gas and timber, but it is also open to campers, cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts, and it is home to a variety of wildlife species.
Hunters and anglers were among the groups who expressed strong outrage.
