Denver’s many marches continue to march on: Next, a ‘Tax Day’ march
There must be a direct relationship between the frequency of tweets launched by a sitting U.S. president – in this case, Donald J. Trump – and the frequency of protest marches launched against that president. Or, maybe it’s just that Denver offers an unusually inviting venue for political rallies (that’s not another hackneyed reference to the availability of legal marijuana, OK?).
On the heels of multiple rallies in and around the State Capitol this week protesting the new administration’s long-anticipated crackdown on immigration – which, in turn, followed last weekend’s epic Women’s March, also in protest of Trump administration policies – comes news of another protest march in its planning stages:
Reports Denverite’s Andrew Kenney:
A plan for a national march on Tax Day to demand President Donald Trump’s tax returns is gaining momentum in Denver and around the country.
The president said throughout campaign season that he could not release his tax documents because he was under audit. On Sunday, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said they wouldn’t be released because “people didn’t care,” pointing to the fact that Trump won the election as evidence.
In response, literally one guy on Twitter suggested that a popular protest on Tax Day would disprove that point. Twenty-thousand retweets later, plans for events are springing up around the country.
Denverite says the Colorado edition of the national Tax Day protest has 3,600 people already committed to the April 15 march and another 12,000 interested as of Jan. 26, per the event’s Facebook page. Organizers plan to follow the same route as the Women’s March.
Kenney gives us a heads-up on some other upcoming marches, including “a planned protest this Friday demanding greater constituent access to Sen. Cory Gardner, as well as another Friday protest regarding purported Denver Police Department surveillance tactics.”
And to think protest season is just starting to heat up; the weather is only going to get warmer (after a few more blizzards).
