It’s Sen. Don Coram now, as Montrose Republican ascends

If you know Rep. Don Coram, then you should know he’s now Sen. Don Coram.

The affable legislator from Montrose was elected by a vacancy committee from Senate District 6 Saturday in Dolores. He was elected 87-24 to Montrose County Commissioner David White.

Coram will fill the final two years of the term vacated by Sen. Ellen Roberts of Durango. Roberts resigned in October to focus on her family and law practice.

Marc Catlin, the water rights development coordinator for  Montrose County, was elected to replace Coram as the representative from House District 58 that includes Montrose, San Miguel, Dolores and Montezuma counties.

In a three-person race, Catlin received 48 votes out of 67 votes, the Cortez Journal reported. Catlin was nominated by Coram.

Coram ran unopposed for re-election. In the House, he worked well across the aisle, earning respect and clout in the lower chamber.  He served on key committees, including Transportation and Energy; Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources; House Services; and State, Veterans and Military Affairs

“I’m not a politician,” Coram told those voting Saturday, the Journal reported. “I’m one of you. I am you.”

Roberts served six years in the House and four in the Senate. She briefly mounted a run for U.S. Senate in 2015. A moderate, for sure, Roberts waffled on whether she was pro-choice, having said previously she was, and quickly dropped out.

In hindsight, plenty of Republicans have said in private conversations she would have been a more formidable opponent for incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet.

Bennet beat El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn, a far-right conservative, by more than 5.5 points.

And a year and a half later Roberts is out of politics.
