Same old committees, lots of new chairs in state Senate
Colorado Senate Republicans held their majority in the chamber during this month’s election but shuffled their committee leadership deck Wednesday.
Notably, Sen-elect Bob Gardner of Colorado Springs will lead the powerful Judiciary Committee, which handles legislation regarding the state court system, the state Constitution, prisons and public safety.
He replaced Ellen Roberts of Durango.
Sen. Jack Tate of Centennial will chair the Senate Labor and Technology Committee, which will be key to creating better-paying high tech jobs in the state. He succeeds Chris Holbert of Parker, who was elected Senate majority leader earlier this month.
Kevin Lundberg of Berthoud replaces Kevin Grantham of Canon City as Appropriations Committee chairman. Grantham is set to become Senate president when the next session convenes Jan. 11.
The rest of the committee chairs are the same as the last two years:
“Our goal when making assignments was to diversify rather than concentrate power, which gets more of our members involved in the leadership of committees and strategic planning on the issues they handle,” Holbert said in a statement.
“A lot of thought also was given to how the committee chairs and vice-chairs will work together as a team. It isn’t our goal to run a top-town kind of operation, but to ensure that committee members have a lot of say in what bills they want to sponsor and consider, giving them a much greater voice in where our caucus is heading.”
Democrats, who hold the majority in the House, had not yet finalized committee assignments Wednesday.
