The Hot Sheet, August 4, 2016
VOL. 01 NO. 145 | AUGUST 04, 2016 | COLORADOSTATESMAN.COM/THE-HOT-SHEET | © 2016By TCS Editor and Publisher Jared Wright

DENVER – Another dawn, a new Hot Sheet prepared just for you. If you’re reading this, you made it through to a new day, presumably healthy and happy. If, however, you are reading this from a hospital bed (God forbid) following yesterday’s whirlwind of presidential ticket candidates through our humble little metro area, may these words have a profound healing effect on you (how they will, I have no idea given that it’s more likely they put you there in the first place, but hang in there).
As RNC Chairman Reince Priebus spent yesterday – part of it right here in Colorado – making unpleasant phone calls, preparing “Presidential Candidate Plan B,” and issuing statements on the $400 million in various currencies of cold hard cash on wooden pallets the United States government reportedly sent to Iran as part of a failed 1979 arms deal settlement, Coloradans got an up-close and personal look at two campaigns for president with visits by Republican VP nominee Mike Pence to Colorado Springs and Denver, and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to Aspen and Commerce City.
Yeah, you heard about that did you? Understandable. Every Colorado reporter and their fifth cousins three times removed were on hand at the Clinton and Pence events (minus a couple of private fundraisers) heaping that information onto your plate trying to feed that intense political appetite of yours. Can you say, “Echo, echo, chamber, chamber!” But we get it. We in the media know you’re hungry.
So, what about those fundraisers and some of the people behind them? Read on for an exclusive on that and more in your ultimate daily briefing on all things Colorado politics …
“Hillary Clinton offers a third Obama term.” (A baby lets out a cry from somewhere in the crowd). “My feelings exactly.”
Now, your substrata feed straight from Colorado’s politics pipeline:
TWO COLORADO PRESIDENTIAL FUNDRAISERS WITHIN 24 HOURS, WHO’S RAISING CASH FOR THE PREZ CANDIDATES AND WHO’S CRASHING THE PARTIES? – Colorado GOP Communications Director Kyle Kholi was crashing the party. He perhaps inadvertently took the advice of die-hard Bernie Sanders supporters and attempted to “crash” the Tuesday night Hillary Clinton fundraiser in Aspen with a friend. And reportedly they got a honk of admiration or two as they held signs out in front of cars driving past on their way into the event location. One sign read “Coal jobs not Clinton” and the other had “Get out of jail free card” scrolled on it. Kohli was in somewhat like-minded company, at least when it came to being anti-Hillary. Green Party activists/Bernie or Busters were also there promoting their own version of #Imwithher in the form of Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein.

@kylekohli: “Got a thumbs up and honk from cab driver dropping ppl off at @HillaryClinton Aspen fundraiser #copolitics“
THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY AT THE CLINTON ASPEN FUNDRAISER – So what about the cash? Clinton walked into the home of Egyptian-born American businessman Charif Souki – a man who amassed his millions working for and founding liquid natural gas companies – Tuesday night with roughly $44 million cash on hand in her campaign coffers. The fundraiser was hosted for roughly 85 people and would have added a minimum of $650,000 to her campaign account based on the entry fees. That’s a big chunk of change from one event, but hey – it’s Aspen, folks.
But there’s more …
ICAHN VS. SOUKI, LIQUID NATURAL GAS SUCCESS VS. LOCAL CONTROL OVER FRACKING – Hillary’s Aspen fundraiser host Souki is the former founder and CEO of Cheniere Energy and later founder of Tellurian Investments, which he now runs as a direct competitor to Cheniere. Souki was forced to leave Cheniere at the end of last year due to a difference of opinion with billionaire board member Carl Icahn – in other words, Icahn fired him.
“There is no doubt that Charif Souki has proven that he is a talented entrepreneur but at this time there is also little doubt that the board wished to move the company in a direction that differed greatly from the path Mr. Souki wanted,” Icahn said in a statement. “It is also telling that Mr. Souki sold a great deal of his stock, which made it somewhat easier for him to ‘swing for the fences’ making it a win-win for Mr. Souki but not necessarily for the shareholders.”
So here’s the catch: Icahn is a supporter and sometimes even mentor of Donald Trump, though at times also – as business goes – a business competitor. Icahn has endorsed Trump for president, saying the country would be “lucky” to have Trump in the Oval Office and Trump has called Icahn one of the “great businessmen of the world.” Icahn would also be a very possible secretary of the U.S. Treasury in a Trump administration as he has accepted Trump’s “offer” for the position via Twitter in August 2015. While Icahn has admittedly lost a lot of money in a “bad bet” of purchasing Trump’s Atlantic City Taj Mahal Casino, which Icahn is now closing, the billionaire investor is sticking to his support of Trump. But there’s still more …
Souki is not openly supportive of Clinton, at least not with the press, but he certainly has been with his pocketbook. Charif Souki’s brother Karim Souki – a direct beneficiary of Cheniere Energy and manager of Aspen-based Ajax Holdings – told the Aspen Daily News (identified in that article mistakenly as his son), “We typically support both sides of the aisle,” when asked whether he had long been a supporter of “Hillary for President.”
“We supplied the house,” Karim Souki said.
But campaign finance records show Karim donated $2,700 to Hillary Clinton’s campaign and so did Charif. In fact, the Souki family has donated a total of $18,900 in hard-side cash to Clinton’s campaign this election cycle through July. Trump campaign finance records show no member of the Souki family has donated directly to his campaign.
So did the Souki’s falling out with Icahn in December contribute to a parallel fundraising parting of ways in the presidential race? Or do the two men’s politics simply have their differences much like their business management styles?
And here’s an even bigger question: Clinton told 9News’s Brandon Rittiman in an interview yesterday that she supports local control over fracking in Colorado.
“Well, I have long been in favor of states and cities within states making up their own minds whether or not they want to permit fracking,” Clinton said. “I have been supportive of that. I am not an expert on the Colorado constitution, and what I’m told is that the basis for the Colorado court’s decision was a Colorado constitutional one. So, I still support the right of local communities to make up their own minds about whether or not they want to permit fracking.
For a liquid natural gas tycoon like Souki, the prospect of cities and counties banning or severely limiting fracking throughout a natural gas rich state like Colorado is not exactly helpful. But Souki certainly appears to be trying to buy the ear of potentially the next Democratic President of the United States on that issue as he launches his just announced merger of Tellurian with Texas-based Magellan Petroleum Corp.
What’s more, before Souki moved Cheniere into the LNG exportation business, he had built up a significant infrastructure to import the commodity. Either way, he knows how to hedge his bets and he was most likely betting – up until Trump told Rittiman that he was ok with local control for fracking just last week – that he didn’t need to spend money on Trump to solidify his pro-fracking policy leanings. On that news, we’ll have to wait and see if Souki has to change his straight bet to an exotic one.
Remember, like many things, it all started at an Aspen fundraiser.
THE PENCE COLORADO FUNDRAISER – Mike Pence held a lunch fundraiser in downtown Denver yesterday hosted by RNC Chair Reince Priebus and Colorado Trump Victory Chairman Larry Mizel. The Centennial Institute’s Jeff Hunt provided a photo of the occasion. In the background can be seen uber-GOP-fundraiser Katie Behnke, managing partner of Starboard Group, who is coordinating fundraising for the Trump-Pence ticket in Colorado. The price for lunch was $10,000 per couple for VIP seating and lunch, or $2,500 per person for lunch only. There was limited seating available, and it appeared to be a small venue, possibly Maggiano’s Little Italy.

(4) Gov. John Hickenlooper – stayed seated behind Clinton on stage during her entire remarks (perhaps a consolation prize?) Clinton: “It’s great to be here with your governor. I am such a fan of Governor Hickenlooper for a lot of reasons, but one of the main reasons is because he does understand how we can create more jobs, and what has happened here in Colorado under his leadership proves that. And he has used his own experience as a small businessman who grew a business and was successful not to turn his back on what it took, but to try to help more people get the tools they need to start those businesses, to grow those businesses. And what a stark contrast to Donald Trump who has spent his career stiffing small businesses, refusing to pay his bills to small businesses. …”
Hickenlooper: “The first time we sat down and we spent a little over an hour together, I don’t think I’ve ever met a governor, or a senator, or a congressman, any elected official that understands the importance of policy details, has spent her life really working on how to solve problems, how to make this country better, than Hillary Clinton.”

STRONG WORDS FROM ONE CANDIDATE WHO ALWAYS SEEMS TO SAY WHAT’S ON HIS MIND – Green Party candidate for U.S. Senate Arn Menconi, a boisterous man who was once arrested on Capitol Hill for protesting U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, managed to get a selfie yesterday with Gov. Mike Pence during Pence’s Denver campaign town hall. The caption he posted with the photo may have not been what Pence would have expected, though the look on his face does seem somewhat cautiously skeptical …

@ArnMenconi: “A selfie with Neofascist Gov Mike Pence & the only black person at the Trump Pence Rally.., a secret service person.”
Menconi then went on to post a picture of a Trump Pence placard sign that he penned his signature to, offering to sell it to the highest bidder and donate the proceeds to “help Syrian refugees.”NEED A JOB?
