The Regional Transportation District now has new ways of quickly alerting customers to service changes.

CPR reports that notifications will be sent out through the RTD NextRide app, as well as Google Maps and the Transit App.

“I [publish] alerts in probably 30 seconds that used to take me five minutes,” Virginia Johnson of RTD told CPR. “That five minutes that used to take me to write an alert is an eternity when you’re standing in the downtown loop wondering where your train is.”

RTD is still not able to text passengers with updates, although it will debut within the next two years. Previously, alerts came most commonly via e-mail.

RTD’s 2016 performance report showed the agency falling short of meeting its on-time arrival target of 88% for local bus, First Transit, and regional bus service in the latter half of the year. Light rail exceeded the on-time target of 90%.

Currently, RTD is anticipating service cuts as a result of an employee shortage. Many bus and light rail operators are mandated to work six days per week as a result. The proposed solution is to cut six bus routes and reduce service on 20 more to prevent unpredictable drops in runs due to the lack of a vehicle operator.
