Buford Johnson never rose above the rank of Army private first class during World War II, but heroism for a veteran isn’t measured in stripes.

The 99-year-old Lakewood resident will receive his many medals and ribbons anew on Friday morning from U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter. His honors include the Bronze Star for heroism and the Purple Heart for his injuries on the battlefield.

The ceremony is from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at American Legion Post 178  at 1655 Simms St. in Lakewood.

Johnson served under Gen. George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge on Nov, 10, 1944, when he was cut below the knee by shrapnel. He got treatment on the battlefield and continued fighting on the front lines, Perlmutter’s office said.

Johnson was an expert sharpshooter, according to his other badges and medals.

After the war, he worked in Wyoming and Montana as a ranch hand for 40 years, until he moved to Colorado 17 years ago to live with his daughter, Darlene, and son-in-law, Vincent.

The Army veteran has been a member of the American Legion for more than  60 years and the Veterans of Foreign Wars for five years.
