Colorado National Guard members deployed to the Middle East
The Colorado Army National Guard announced Thursday that more than 200 members are deploying to the Middle East.
The members of the 1st Battalion, 157th Infantry Regiment (Mountain), a unit based at Fort Carson, are deploying to help support an international peacekeeping force that supervises the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty and enforces its terms, according to a news release.
“The soldiers of this battalion are highly trained, motivated and ready to assume the mission of the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai,” said 1-157th Commander U.S. Army Lt. Col. Adam Rhum. The Sinai Peninsula is on the northeast corner of Egypt near the border with Israel.
“We are proud to be part of this long-standing and successful peacekeeping operation,” Rhum said.
Multinational Force and Observers is an independent peacekeeping group headquartered in Rome that is supported by 14 nations.
The unit’s tasks will include conducting reconnaissance patrols, staffing observation posts, and helping facilitate base operations, the release said.
Iran has not sent missile or drone attacks into Egypt as part of its recent campaign to fight back during the current conflict with the U.S. But Egyptian officials are working on the diplomatic front to de-escalate the conflict, according to the online magazine Responsible Statecraft.
The Colorado National Guard is hosting a departure ceremony for the Fort Carson troops Friday morning.
