Monument man allegedly behind home explosion had previous run-in with law: Court records

A man who allegedly caused an explosion in his Monument home that sent five law enforcement officers to the hospital has a history of violence and mental health issues, according to court records.

Miguel Borja, 24, faces attempted homicide and arson charges in connection with the Saturday incident. He is being held at the El Paso County jail on $250,000 bail.

Borja has an open assault case from 2024 involving an assault on a peace officer, court records show. Mental competency questions were raised in that case. He was released on a personal-recognizance bond in January.

In 2023, Borja faced third-degree assault charges, according to records. In that case, a mandatory protection order was issued, as well as a mental health-related order.

At about 5:20 p.m. Saturday, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Monument police officers responded to a family disturbance call at Borja’s home, at 42 Front St., near downtown Monument.

According to a Sheriff’s Office news release, Borja allegedly attempted to set someone on fire before barricading himself inside the home. Officers evacuated the residence and tried communicating with Borja, at which time they smelled a “strong odor of gas” inside the house.

Two Monument officers and three El Paso County deputies were attempting to enter the home when an explosion occurred from inside. All five officers were taken to area hospitals and later released.

Borja, who was treated for “burn-related injuries,” is believed to have intentionally rigged the house to explode.

On Monday, smoke damage could be seen at the rear of the home, and a bottom-floor window was boarded up.

Neighbors said that they did not know Borja well, but that his family seemed friendly.
