Trudeau gives farewell speech ahead of Liberal Party election results

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave what could be one of his final speeches as leader of Canada before election results were released Sunday evening.

Speaking before a Liberal Party convention attended by Mark Carney, the winner of the race to succeed him as the leader of the Liberal Party, Trudeau prefaced his speech by saying he’s “damn proud” of what he’s done over the past 10 years he’s been prime minister, before emphasizing that his speech is “about our future as a party, as a country.”

While touting the work he said his party has done to keep Canada “the best country on Earth,” Trudeau warned of an “existential challenge” and an “economic crisis” as President Donald Trump continues his tariff threats and is set to impose sweeping reciprocal tariffs in early April.

Still, despite the significant economic effects these tariffs could have on Canada, Trudeau seemingly praised the Liberal Party’s focus on a “healthy environment” over a “strong economy.”

“We are a country that refuses to accept the false choice between a strong economy and a healthy environment,” he said.

Trudeau’s speech concluded with a farewell of sorts, as it is unclear whether Trudeau will step down right away after Mark Carney’s win.

He ended by pointing to the crowd, saying the future of Canada is now in “your hands” before receiving applause from supporters.
