Colorado has a new license plate – and you’ll probably start seeing it soon
In June of last year, Colorado Governor Jared Polis approved the creation of a ‘Chicana/o’ special license plate, and as of January 1, it’s an option for drivers hitting the state’s DMV.
The plate features the classic snow-covered mountains typical of many Colorado license plate options, with a sky of red, orange, and yellow. In the center are two hands joining above roses and the phrase “CHICANA/O PRIDE.”
In April 2024 reporting from CPR, Denise Torrez of El Movimiento Sigue – the organization backing the bill to create the plate, described the plate as providing people with a symbol of pride of their heritage, culture, and significance in Colorado. The sunrise is meant to represent “a new beginning,” while the roses represent the beauty of the Chicano/a culture.
This design adds to a long list of more than 200 license plate designs that are available for Colorado drivers (find a list of a few more here). The only requirement for getting the new ‘Chicana/o Pride’ plate is a $50 donation made to El Movimiento Sigue, along with two one-time $25 fees.
