US Postal Service advises voters to send mail-in ballots early to ensure timely delivery

Collection Colorado Voter Guide: 2024 General Election

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is advising voters who plan to cast their ballot by mail to do so soon to ensure their vote is counted in this year’s election.

USPS data indicates that it takes about one day for ballots to ship from voters to election officials. However, USPS recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week before election day on Nov. 5 to be safe.

Regardless of when or how they vote, USPS is reassuring voters that their ballots will be delivered in a secure manner.

“As we anticipate an uptick of ballots in the mail over the coming days, Postal Service employees are working to ensure the ballots of every individual who chooses to vote by mail are delivered quickly and securely,” a USPS statement said. “As in past elections, the Postal Service is ready to deliver your ballot on time. But don’t delay. If you choose to vote by mail, please mail early as every day counts.”

The Postal Service has implemented “extraordinary measures” in the final weeks of the election to ensure ballots arrive to elections officials on time. These measures include extra deliveries and collections, special pick-ups, and local handling and transportation of ballots.

According to USPS, it is more than sufficiently equipped to manage the volume of election mail. In 2020, ballots accounted for just .11% of its total mail volume.
