Arapahoe County to assist voters with disabilities in Thursday event
Arapahoe County is trying to bring in more voters with disabilities this election season with an annual event meant to help people register to vote, learn about ballot issues and prepare to cast ballots.
County officials call the annual event “Ballot Bingo,” according to a news release, and it was born out of a collaboration between the county and Denver nonprofit organization Developmental Pathways to assist people who are eligible to vote and need special assistance in doing so.
This year’s event will take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Brewability Lab brewery in Englewood.
Event staff will provide attendees with technology and assistance for voting, including audio, high-contrast and large-print ballots for visually impaired voters, “sip and puff” adapters for people with mobility impairments and other assistance measures.
The event is part of Arapahoe County’s efforts in recent years to educate people on accessible voting options, according to the release. It is also part of Developmental Pathways’ efforts since 2020 to do the same.
Research shows that people with disabilities vote less frequently than people without, Developmental Pathways’ spokesperson Kim Tenure said.
“We want all voters, especially those with disabilities, to recognize their power,” Tenure said. “Get registered to vote, educate yourself on the issues, and understand that your voice truly matters.”
On Arapahoe County’s ballot this November, voters will choose between candidates for three of five Board of County Commissioner seats, as well as vote on a measure asking voters to release the county from revenue and spending limits imposed by the Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights (TABOR), in other words “de-Brucing.”
