Colorado proposition to require violent offenders serve 85% of sentence qualifies for November ballot
A proposition that would change the requirements for violent offenders to be eligible for parole has officially qualified for the November ballot, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.
If approved, the initiative would require individuals convicted of of violent crimes that occur after Jan. 1, 2025, to serve 85% of their sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Offenders convicted of violent crimes before that date would still be subject to the current requirement of serving 75% of their sentence.
Other initiatives on the ballot aim to enshrine the right to abortion in the State Constitution, ban the hunting of bobcats, lynx, and mountain lions, and address property tax revenue increases and assessment rates.
Four measures concerning issues like school choice, funding for law enforcement, and ranked-choice voting are still in the signature review phase.
