Lauren Boebert, Trisha Calvarese to debate; Murphy Robinson appointed to wildlife commission; Colorado lawmakers launch Second Amendment Caucus| WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Today is Aug. 19, 2024, and here’s what you need to know:
Watch Live: Colorado's Lauren Boebert Democratic challenger Trisha Calvarese clash over economy, jobs, spending
Republican U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert and her Democratic challenger Trisha Calvarese are set to face off in a debate on business and economic issues on Sept. 3 in Roxborough Park.
The lunchtime debate is so far the only meet-up scheduled between the two major party candidates running in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District, which covers Douglas County, parts of Larimer and Weld Counties, and the Eastern Plains.
Boebert and Calvarese both emerged from crowded primaries for the seat formerly represented by Republican U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who resigned in March. Republican Greg Lopez defeated Calvarese in a June special election to serve out the remainder of Buck’s term.
Jared Polis appoints Murphy Robinson to Colorado's wildlife commission
Murphy Robinson, a former deputy mayor and chief of Denver’s public safety department, has been appointed to the state’s wildlife commission.
Gov. Jared Polis announced Robinson’s appointment on Friday.
He will represent sportspersons — hunters and anglers — on the parks and wildlife commission.
“Our Colorado parks is one of the biggest draws to our state and the best assets of our state,” Robinson told Colorado Politics. “I am proud to be able to support and steward the use and longevity of our parks to be enjoyed by our residents and our visitors.”
Seventh time's the charm? Trial judge again under consideration for appeals court vacancy
Colorado’s Court of Appeals has experienced unusually high turnover recently, with Gov. Jared Polis appointing 11 of its 22 members in little under six years.
As Polis prepares to select a 12th judge to the state’s second-highest court, a familiar name is under consideration: District Court Judge Priscilla J. Loew.
For each of the past six vacancies on the court, the citizen-led nominating commission has listed her as a finalist. Polis, who participates in interviews for all Court of Appeals appointments, has gone in a different direction each time. For Loew, the seventh try may be the one.
'I'm all in': Elbert County Manager Shawn Fletcher talks commitment, rumors
It’s always tough to be the new kid but for Elbert County Manager Shawn Fletcher, things have been more than just tough during the 18 months he’s been at the helm of the 21st largest county in the state.
In fact, he said, they have been downright complicated, and at times — scary.
In this tight-knit conservative county of 28,000, Fletcher has been accused as an outsider and an opportunist with no desire to live within the county he serves.
Not helping matters, newly minted pay bumps and employment contracts for both Fletcher and longtime County Attorney Bart Greer have ignited public scorn and fueled questions media and blistering comments from residents on social media.
Colorado legislators launch Second Amendment Caucus
Colorado legislators are launching a Second Amendment Caucus, which organizers said will focus on “promoting and protecting the right to keep and bear firearms in Colorado.”
“Today marks an important step in defending the Second Amendment rights of every Coloradoan,” said Rep. Ryan Armagost, R-Berthoud. “The Colorado Second Amendment Caucus is committed to creating sensible policies that protect our freedoms while promoting responsible firearm ownership and safety.”
According to Armagost and Rep. Scott Bottoms, R-Colorado Springs, the caucus’ mission centers around three core principles: crafting thoughtful policies that uphold the Second Amendment, maintaining a bipartisan commitment to defending these rights, and educating the public on firearms and firearm safety.
