Democrat Yadira Caraveo hauls in nearly $1.8 million for quarter in Colorado’s toss-up 8th CD
Democratic U.S. Rep. Yadira Caraveo plans to report raising nearly $1.8 million in the most recent fundraising quarter in a bid to defend Colorado’s battleground 8th Congressional District, her campaign told Colorado Politics.
The first-term lawmaker heads into the general election with an eye-popping $3.3 million in the bank for a race that could determine which party controls the U.S. House of Representatives once ballots are counted in November.
A spokesman for Caraveo’s campaign said she raised more than $1,769,000 for the three-month period from April 1 to June 30, including more than $1.2 million in receipts since the pre-primary reporting period ended on June 5. The quarterly figure pushes Caraveo’s total fundraising this cycle past $4.5 million.
It’s a bigger quarterly haul than any totals reported by any Colorado congressional candidate not named Adam Frisch or Lauren Boebert, the Democrat and Republican, respectively, who have demolished state fundraising records in recent years.
Caraveo, a Thornton pediatrician and former state lawmaker, is seeking a second term representing the state’s newest congressional seat, which covers parts of Adams, Weld and Larimer counties north of the Denver metro area.
She’s facing Republican challenger Gabe Evans, a freshman state lawmaker from Fort Lupton, who won the nomination last week in a two-way primary. Evans has yet to report his second quarter totals, but through June 5, he’d raised just over $646,048 and had $225,068 on hand.
Congressional candidates face a July 15 deadline to file reports with the Federal Election Commission covering fundraising and expenditures for the second quarter.
There’s no doubt that the Front Range residents who watch TV will be seeing plenty of Caraveo and Evans on their screens this fall. So far, the Democrats’ and Republicans’ leading national House campaign committees have reserved nearly $13 million airtime in the Denver market, with the attack ads set to start flying later this summer.
Caraveo told Colorado Politics that she isn’t surprised her campaign has attracted so much in contributions.
“I think that amount of money that we are fundraising is indicative of two things,” she said. “One is that I am willing to put in the work to have a successful campaign, just like I am working hard for the people of the 8th District. And because of that work, we have the confidence of people in Colorado and across the country. This district is incredibly important to the majority of the House, and I’ve been doing a good job, I think, as a representative — that’s what this indicates.”
Added Caraveo: “So I think that that is indicative of the strength of the campaign overall, and we’ll keep working to make sure that we get the message out to voters on the 8th District about my record, about what I’ve done, and about the hard work that we’re going to continue to do.”
