Aurora lawmakers to discuss plan for ridding municipal court of domestic violence cases

Aurora’s lawmakers will continue conversations about removing domestic violence cases from municipal court and vote to move forward with a resolution telling the city attorney to challenge a recently-passed Colorado law that would ban flat fee contracts for indigent defense.

In Monday night’s study session, Councilmember Dustin Zvonek will bring forward a resolution draft for transitioning domestic violence cases out of Aurora Municipal Court.

City Council documents said the resolution would “direct the City Manager, City Attorney, Court Administrator, and Presiding Judge to collaborate with key stakeholders” to plan for the transition.

The resolution says a plan — created with the input and assistance of various stakeholders — will be presented to the city council during a study session on Aug. 12. It must include a detailed timeframe for the transition and an analysis of the pros and cons of such transition, according to council documents.

Zvonek will also bring forward a resolution directing the city attorney to pursue legal action challenging Colorado House Bill 24-1437, which prohibits flat fee contracts for defending indigent clients.

Gov. Jared Polis signed the bill into law earlier this month.

The resolution alleges the law “violates the Colorado Constitution including home rule authority.”

At Monday night’s regular city council meeting, councilmembers will vote on a resolution to place school resource officers in Cherry Creek School District Schools, including Smoky Hill High School, Cherokee Trail High School, Grandview High School, Overland High School, in Cherry Creek middle and elementary schools.

Councilmembers are expected to vote to finalize an ordinance changing the makeup of, and adding term limits to, the Aurora Housing Authority Board and finalize an ordinance allowing residents of the city to own four dogs, instead of the existing limit of three.

A bill that would allow retail cannabis stores in the city to stay open until midnight will be introduced. Stores currently must close by 10 p.m.

The study session will be held at 5:15 p.m. in the Aurora Room of the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Pkwy.

The council’s regular meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Paul Tauer Aurora City Council Chamber, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway.

Both meetings will also be live streamed at auroraTV.org and Youtube.com/TheAuroraChannel. They will also stream live on cable channels 8 and 880 in Aurora.

Those who want to speak during “Public Invited to Be Heard” must submit a speaker slip by 6:30 p.m. Monday, the day of the meeting. Anyone who wants to comment on an agenda item must submit a speaker slip before the city clerk reads the title of the item.
