DNC sending $100K grant to Colorado Democrats to hire campus organizers, target down-ballot races

The Democratic National Committee on Monday said it’s sending a six-figure grant to the Colorado Democratic Party to boost down-ballot candidates ahead of the November election.

It’s part of a nearly $2 million, first-of-its-kind program the national party announced to target races in 11 states that aren’t among this year’s presidential battlegrounds, the party said.

In Colorado, the state party stands to receive $100,000 to fund a campus organizing program, party officials told Colorado Politics.

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison said the party’s powerhouse fundraising enables Democrats to strengthen organizing and turn-out efforts in states across the country, including Colorado.

“The DNC is committed to reelecting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, and, as President Biden has made clear since his inauguration, Democrats must also win up and down the ballot and strengthen organizing across all 50 states,” Harrison said in a statement.

“Today’s announced investment in the Colorado State Democratic Party shows that priority in action,” Harrison said. “Colorado Democrats have fought tirelessly to better the lives of Colorado and defend against Trump and Republicans’ extreme agenda to rip away Americans’ most fundamental rights. With record-breaking fundraising under President Biden and a winning agenda Americans’ overwhelmingly support, the DNC and Democratic state parties across the country have the momentum to strengthen coordinated operations to deliver wins for Democrats and all Coloradans.”

Noting that Colorado has one of the youngest electorates in the country, the DNC said the party expects the additional funding to hire campus organizers can help “solidify Democrats’ status in the state for years to come.”

Following an unbroken string of wins in the state since 2018, Democrats hold every statewide elected office, five of Colorado’s eight U.S. House seats and historic majorities in both chambers of the General Assembly. In 2020, Biden defeated Donald Trump in Colorado by double digits.

Other states receiving funding as part of the DNC’s grant program include Texas, Utah, Nebraska, South Dakota, Maryland and New Mexico, the party said. The funding is earmarked for different purposes in different states, from hiring rural organizers in Nebraska and Kansas to supporting the Democratic U.S. Senate nominees in Texas and Maryland. In Minnesota, ABC News reported, the money will pay to help reach apartment dwellers.

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib welcomed the funding in a statement to Colorado Politics.

“Colorado is one of the youngest states in the country, and we know the value of meeting our young voters where they are,” Murib said. “We’re determined to do what it takes to ensure that Colorado remains a Democratic stronghold for years to come and reelect President Biden, Vice President Harris, and our Democrats down the ballot so that they can keep delivering for Coloradans.”

Murib’s Republican counterpart, state GOP Chairman Dave Williams, waved off the news.

“They are going to need it with how sick and tired voters are of Joe Biden and his broken economy,” Williams told Colorado Politics in a text message.
