El Paso County joins lawsuit against Colorado ‘sanctuary’ laws; Tim Supplitt talks about pragmatic liberalism; John Eastman withdraws from Colorado case | WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Today is May 13, 2024, and here’s what you need to know:
El Paso County joins lawsuit against Colorado 'sanctuary laws'
El Paso County leaders on Tuesday approved a resolution that adds legal teeth to what had been a largely symbolic local fight against state laws they say prioritize the rights of undocumented immigrants at the expense of community safety.
In a unanimous decision, the Board of El Paso County Commissioners gave the go-ahead to join a Douglas County lawsuit challenging two Colorado laws that opponents say undermine local efforts to keep communities safe, especially from undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes. Commissioner Longinos Gonzalez, who was unable to attend Tuesday’s meeting, was excused from the vote.
Q&A with Tim Supplitt | Promoting an 'abundance agenda' at the center-left Denver New Liberals
Tim Supplitt is the chapter lead with Denver New Liberals, a local edition of the self-described “pragmatically liberal” Center for New Liberalism, an organization that aims to excite voters about center-left politics.
The 33-year-old works as a travel agent and says he’s been a life-long Democrat. He moved to the Denver area five and a half years ago and enjoys movies, sports and watching reality competition shows, including Survivor, Big Brother and The Traitors.
On the heels of the just-concluded legislative session, Colorado Politics asked Supplitt about the group’s work on legislation and in a handful of Democratic primary campaigns, in addition to its overall mission. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.
Republican congressional candidate Dave Williams endorsed by political arm of House Freedom Caucus
Republican congressional candidate Dave Williams, the chairman of the Colorado GOP, this week landed an endorsement from the House Freedom Fund, the political arm of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.
Williams is running against podcaster and Americans for Prosperity executive Jeff Crank in the June 25 primary for the heavily Republican 5th Congressional District seat held by retiring U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn.
In its endorsement statement, the House Freedom Fund noted that Williams is one of only a few candidates for open seats this cycle who has been endorsed by former President Donald Trump. Williams, the organization added, “stands in stark contrast to many party chairs in that he doesn’t cower to pressure. He is an unapologetic conservative.”
Nancy Pallozzi's bid to rebuild Jeffco GOP hits snag amid uproar over Kristi Noem book | TRAIL MIX
Everything was on track for the Jefferson County Republicans’ Lincoln Day Dinner — until its keynote speaker told the world about the time she shot and killed an uncontrollable 14-month-old dog.
Before a British newspaper published excerpts from South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s forthcoming book, “No Going Back,” the Republican was rumored to be among the leading prospects for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate.
That’s one reason the Jeffco GOP was thrilled that Noem had agreed to headline the party’s annual fundraiser, scheduled for May 4 at a Golden hotel. Her publisher had even sent the party hundreds of copies of Noem’s book — subtitled “The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward” — to hand out to donors at the dinner, three days before its official release.
Facing ejection from Colorado case, John Eastman withdraws as attorney
Attorney John C. Eastman, who faces both professional discipline and criminal charges for his role in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, withdrew as an attorney from a Colorado case on Friday before a federal judge could terminate him from the litigation.
Under the rules of Colorado’s U.S. District Court, an attorney cannot be in “good standing” to practice if they are not in good standing everywhere else they are admitted to practice. Eastman is currently on “involuntary inactive status” in California, after a state judge concluded earlier this year that Eastman’s attempts to subvert the presidential election on former President Donald Trump’s behalf merited his disbarment.
On April 9, the clerk’s office for the district court notified Judge S. Kato Crews that Eastman, one of the attorneys on a constitutional rights lawsuit out of Colorado Springs, was “no longer considered in good standing” because of his discipline in California. Crews, in turn, directed Eastman to explain why he should not be removed as an attorney from the case.
