Debates set for Colorado’s House vacancy election, 4th and 8th congressional districts GOP primaries

The candidates running in Colorado’s June special election to fill the remainder of former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck’s term are scheduled to debate at a country music venue in Denver days before ballots go out to voters, the Republican Women of Weld announced this week.

Dubbed the Colorado Republican Rumble with a Twist, the afternoon of debates will also feature face-offs between GOP candidates in the 4th and 5th congressional district primaries.

The “twist,” debate organizers said, is the first debate to feature the four candidates running in the upcoming vacancy election in the 4th CD, which was triggered when Buck resigned from Congress this spring. The special election takes place simultaneously with Colorado’s June 25 primary election.

The debates are scheduled from noon to 5 p.m. on June 1 at the Grizzly Rose in Denver. Doors open at 11 a.m.

“We’re excited to let voters get an up-close look at the candidates in these important races, along with some delicious barbecue,” said Tammy Klein, the GOP group’s vice president. She added that she was grateful that nearly every eligible candidate is scheduled to participate.

All candidates on the ballot in the three races — the special election and the two GOP primaries — has confirmed they’ll attend, except for U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, whose campaign spokesman noted that she’s signed up to attend at least four other debates and forums in the surrounding days.

The special election candidates are Republican Greg Lopez, Democrat Trisha Calvarese, Libertarian Hannah Goodman and Approval Voting Party nominee Frank Attwood.

The winner will serve the roughly six months remaining in Buck’s term.

In addition to Boebert, the candidates running in the Republican primary in the 4th CD — covering Douglas County, the Loveland area and the Eastern Plains — are former state Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg of Sterling, state Reps. Richard Holtorf of Akron and Mike Lynch of Wellington, former talk radio host Deborah Flora and business consultant Peter Yu.

GOP primary candidates in the 8th CD are state Rep. Gabe Evans of Fort Lupton and former state Rep. Janak Joshi of Colorado Springs. The district stretches from suburbs north of Denver in Adams County into portions of Weld County, including Greeley.

The debates’ moderators are Colorado Politics reporter Ernest Luning, political strategist and 9News commentator Kelly Maher, Colorado Sun reporter Jesse Paul and Chris Rourke, owner of Rourke Media.

The $30 tickets, which include all-you-can eat barbecue from Dickey’s BBQ, must be purchased in advance, Klein said.

The event’s hosts are the women’s group and the Lincoln Club of Colorado. Its sponsors are Steve Wells of Wells Ranch, 4x Industrial and 710KNUS.

Primary and special election ballots start going in the mail on June 3 and are due back to county clerks by June 25.
