Denver Mayor Mike Johnston endorses three candidates for school board
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is putting his weight behind three candidates for the city’s education governing body: Marlene De La Rosa, Kimberlee Sia and John Youngquist.
Sia is running in Denver Public Schools Board of Education’s District 1, De La Rosa in District 5, and Youngquist for the at-large seat.
Saying he is proud to endorse the three candidates, Johnston added: “These candidates bring more than 60 years of education experience, community leadership and a demonstrated record as collaborative problem solvers. Every great city is built on a great school system, and as a former educator and DPS parent, I believe Marlene, Kimberlee and John bring the change, experience, and community voice that our school board needs in this moment.”
Also running for the board are: Scott Baldermann in District 1; Charmaine Lindsay and Adam Slutzker in District 5; and, Kwame Spearman and Candidate Brittni Johnson for the at-large seat.
Election officials began mailing ballots to voters today. The election takes place on Nov. 7.

Johnston said Youngquist offers 35 years of experience as a teacher and principal, including 10 years as the “revered principal of East High School.”
“He knows what it takes to keep schools safe, support academic excellence, and work collaboratively with families and parents,” the mayor said. “When I first became a school principal, John was one of my role models for what a great school leader can do, and I know he is the right leader at the right time to put DPS back on track.”

Of De La Rosa, Johnston said she has dedicated her life to “lifting up and giving voice to Denverites on the Northside and across the city through public service.” Johnston added: “I’m proud to support her because I know that as a board member, she will continue that work to bring important change for educators and students.”

Sia is a lifelong educator, he said, bringing 25 years of experience and “deep love for education and community engagement necessary to bring the change that DPS needs.”
“I have known her for decades and admire how she has proven again and again that every child in every community can achieve academic excellence,” Johnston said. “Her expertise in student-centered, equitable education will be a strong addition to the Board.”
