Larimer County treasurer warns of potential tax scam

Larimer County Treasurer Irene Josey is warning county property owners about a phony tax lien warrant that some residents have received.

Multiple reports have been filed in Larimer County after residents say they received a notice through the U.S. Postal Service from the Tax Processing Unit in Larimer County, which doesn’t exist, Josey said.

The phony letter says the recipient has an outstanding tax debt, which resulted in a warrant being issued.

Because of that debt, the letter states the Federal Tax Authorities use warrants to collect action and will garnish wages, bank accounts, seize property or seize federal tax refunds and create a property lien to pay the debt, according to a news release.

Recipients are directed to call a 1-800 number to avoid penalties, but Josey is urging residents to disregard the false notice and contact local law enforcement.

Anyone with information about the letter or with questions regarding property tax status are encouraged to contact the treasurer’s office at 970-498-7020 or emailing lctreasurer@larimer.org
