President Donald Trump has canceled a planned trip to Denver on Friday to attend a high-dollar fundraiser with U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, the White House said Wednesday night.

“Out of an abundance of caution from the coronavirus outbreak, the President has decided to cancel his upcoming events in Colorado and Nevada,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement, following the president’s televised address to the nation about the growing pandemic.

Trump had also been planning to speak to the annual meeting of the Republican Jewish Coalition in Las Vegas on Saturday.

The Friday fundraising luncheon, with ticket prices topping out at $100,000 per couple, would have been Trump’s second campaign visit to Colorado in just over three weeks.

Trump appeared on Feb. 20 at a massive rally in Colorado Springs, where the president brought Gardner on stage and said the Republican senator had been “rock solid” and “with us 100%.”

Before speaking to the crowd at the packed Broadmoor World Arena, Trump held a joint fundraiser with Gardner billed as a “special rally opportunity.”

Friday’s fundraiser listed Republican National Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and GOP mega-donors Larry and Carol Mizel, co-chairs of Trump’s Colorado finance team, among the hosts, according to an invitation obtained by Colorado Politics.

Other hosts of the Colorado fundraiser included RNC Co-Chairman Tommy Hicks Jr., Todd Ricketts, a co-owner of the Chicago Cubs and the GOP’s national finance chairman, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, finance chair for the Trump campaign.

The event was to benefit Trump and Gardner’s campaigns and the RNC.

Trump said in December that he planned to campaign in Colorado “a lot” to boost Gardner’s re-election bid.

“We’ll be there. We’ll be in Colorado,” Trump said in response to an invitation to visit the state from the owner of a Fruita childcare business at a White House event. “We’ll be in Colorado a lot, actually.”

Added Trump: “We have a great senator in Colorado. We have to get him extended. I’ll be there a lot.”

One of the leading Democrats running in a primary for Gardner’s seat has been invoking Trump’s impending visit in fundraising emails and social media posts.

“President Donald Trump is coming to Colorado on Friday to attack our campaign and host a lavish fundraiser for our Republican opponent, Senator Cory Gardner,” said a fundraising appeal sent Wednesday by John Hickenlooper’s campaign.

The email added that it was the job of the email’s recipients to “[r]aise as much money as possible from grassroots supporters like you to ensure we have enough resources to fight back against Trump’s attacks on John Hickenlooper.”
