Red Cross to honor Kendrick Castillo, classmate at ‘heroes’ fundraiser

The American Red Cross will honor slain high school student Kendrick Castillo and his classmate Brendan Bialy at its heroes soiree on Feb. 29. The two teenagers attacked a gunman at STEM School Highlands Ranch in May 2019.

“The spilt second decision for both Baily and Castillo to take down the suspect and prevent further disaster is truly an act of heroism,” the Red Cross said in an announcement. “Unfortunately, Castillo was shot during the struggle and died from his injuries. But without the valiant efforts from either high school senior, countless students and teachers could have been injured that day.”

The soiree is the main annual fundraising event for the Red Cross in Colorado. Money raised goes toward emergency response. Gov. Jared Polis and First Gentleman Marlon Reis are the co-chairs of the event, which will take place at the Seawell Ballroom within the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Alec McKinney, the juvenile suspect in the shooting, pleaded guilty in early February to first-degree murder, among other charges, and will face sentencing on May 18. His alleged co-conspirator, Devon Erickson, pleaded not guilty.
