Chris Romer, Barbara O’Brien among Colorado politicians endorsing Mike Bloomberg

Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg has added more names to the roster of familiar Colorado politicians endorsing the billionaire ahead of the state’s March 3 Super Tuesday primary.

Former Lt. Gov. Barbara O’Brien, who is currently a member of the Denver Public Schools board; former state Senate Majority Leader Rollie Heath, D-Boulder; former state Sen. Chris Romer, D-Denver; and former state Rep. Rosemary Marshall, D-Denver, are all throwing their support behind the former New York mayor, his campaign said.

In addition, the Bloomberg campaign added dozens of new members to the Colorado for Mike Advisory Committee.

“Colorado for Mike Bloomberg is gaining momentum as voters want a candidate that can defeat Donald Trump,” said Ray Rivera, the campaign’s state director, in a statement. “We’re proud to announce the endorsements of these committed Colorado public servants for Mike Bloomberg.”

Bloomberg is one of eight major Democratic candidate on Colorado’s primary ballot. After skipping nominating contests that take place in February, he’s been pouring millions of dollars into advertising in Colorado and building a large campaign operation with nine field offices around the state and more than 50 paid staffers.

The endorsers cited Bloomberg’s success in business – the self-made billionaire is typically ranked as the world’s 10th richest man – and his record tackling climate change and eduction issues.

“I’m supporting Mike because he’s a uniter, not a divider,” O’Brien said in a statement. “From my experience both as lieutenant governor and on the Denver School Board, I know how important it is to build diverse coalitions. As mayor of the most progressive and diverse city in the country, Mike was able to bring people together to improve educational outcomes. His plans to invest in career and technical education, along with his robust plan for tackling climate change, demonstrate that he is the best candidate to take on the challenges facing our country.”

Romer, who ran unsuccessfully for Denver mayor in 2011, is the president and co-founder of Denver-based Project Canary, a benefits corporation that monitors oil and gas drilling sites for methane and other emissions. He said he’s supporting Bloomberg “because he’s a doer, not a talker.”

Added Romer: “On issues of critical importance to Colorado like climate change, Mike has a record of accomplishment unparalleled by anyone in the field. Not only has Mike shown that he’s the best candidate to take on Donald Trump, his plans are the best to move America forward.”

Heath, who retired from the Colorado Senate after the 2016 election due to term limits, said the stakes are high.

“Bloomberg will not hesitate to stand up and call Trump’s bluff and won’t let him get away with his usual tactics,” Heath said in a statement. “I feel this is critical if we’re going to beat him – and we have to beat him, because, without exaggeration, nothing short of the future of the Union is at stake.”

Marshall praised Bloomberg’s work on the Greenwood Initiative, saying it demonstrates his commitment to “addressing systemic bias preventing Black Americans from building wealth.”

“Mike put pursuing economic justice for Black America at the forefront of his plans as president, and I’m proud to announce my support for his candidacy today,” she said in a release.

Other prominent Bloomberg supporters in Colorado include former state House Speaker Terrance Carroll, retired NFL wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, state Rep. Tom Sullivan, ProgressNow founder Michael Huttner, 2008 Democratic National Convention co-chair Juanita Chacon, former Colorado Democratic Party treasurer Judith Zee Steinberg, former Denver human services manager Donna Good and hotelier Walter Isenberg.
