Colorado Gov. Jared Polis got a glimmer of the spotlight Tuesday night in Democrats’ response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, delivered by Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Whitmer listed Democratic leaders across the country who she said are getting things done.

Polis was joined on that list by Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers.

“In Colorado, Gov. Jared Polis has enacted free all-day kindergarten,” Whitmer said.

Polis’ office released a statement Tuesday night.

“I appreciate Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s acknowledgment of the important value and success of our bipartisan free full-day kindergarten program, which is saving parents money and helping Colorado’s students,” Polis stated.

Whitmer’s said in her 11-minute rebuttal that the president’s talk of the stock market leaves behind people struggling to get by.

“Every Democrat running for president has a plan to expand health care for all Americans,” she said.

She spoke of bills passed by Democrats: lower drug prices, equal pay and higher minimum wage.

“Who works for hardworking Americans?” she said. “Democrats do.”

Polis also responded to the president in his statement.

“We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history where we must reject the manufactured division that is being shoved forward for the sake of political gain and work together on bold efforts to expand opportunity for all,” Polis stated. “That’s why in Colorado, we’re working to invest in education, fighting to lower the cost of health care, address the economic and moral threat of climate change and create good-paying jobs.”
