DMV services to be interrupted during upgrade
Some of the 35 online services that the Division of Motor Vehicles offers will experience a disruption from Jan. 25-26 during the implementation of a new information-sharing program. Renewals of driver’s licenses and identification cards will be unavailable during this time.
In addition, the Union Town Center branch of the El Paso County Clerk and Recorder will close on Saturday.
“The DMV apologizes for any inconvenience the upgrade causes, but is excited to have an additional tool to help protect against identity theft,” the division wrote in a press release.
The upgrade is to implement the State-to-State Verification Service, a voluntary program to check whether drivers have more than one active license across states. Known as S2S, the technology is expected to prevent identity theft and ensure that drivers with serious violations have an easily-accessible record.
S2S, in which Colorado will pay an annual fee of $29,651, plus an annual per-driver fee that totals $211,462, is a program of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.
Earlier this month, another AAMVA database temporarily experienced an outage, shutting down DMV offices in many states.
“During this time, there was no ability to process messages that support transactions of driver licenses and motor vehicle titles,” AAMVA wrote in its weekly newsletter. “This outage prevented most motor vehicle agencies from issuing/renewing driver licenses and issuing vehicle titles. AAMVA will conduct a full analysis to determine the root cause of the outage.”
S2S is scheduled to be operational in Colorado on Jan. 27.
