Law enforcement agencies’ vigilance during the holiday party season resulted in 514 arrests for impaired driving during the latest iteration of “The Heat is On.”

The December enforcement period from Dec. 6-16 followed similar high-visibility crackdowns during the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Super Bowl weekend.

“Impaired drivers put everyone else on the road at risk, and CDOT will continue to address this issue to help curb traffic fatalities in 2020,” said Shoshana Lew, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation. “Drive sober every time you get behind the wheel.”

Ninety-five agencies participated in “The Heat is On” campaign. The Denver Police Department was the locality with the most arrests, at 52, followed by Colorado Springs Police with 40. Only Larimer and El Paso counties and the city of Loveland saw in excess of 25 arrests.

The Colorado State Patrol also arrested 106 individuals. For every 10 arrests, a white light bulb on the “DUI tree,” which resided on the 16th Street Mall in Denver, was replaced with a red or blue bulb.

CDOT reports that a conviction for driving under the influence can cost in excess of $13,500 when considering license suspensions, legal fees, increased insurance costs and fines.

The next enforcement period will last from Dec. 27 to Jan. 2. CDOT provides funding to agencies for enforcement during 16 occasions per year. The agencies can then employ checkpoints or additional officers during the campaigns.
