U.S. Sen Michael Bennet announced that he is a new member of the bipartisan Senate Climate Solutions Caucus.

“We need enduring solutions – ones that won’t whipsaw back and forth with changing political winds,” said Bennet in a statement. “We need to build the same broad consensus in Washington to address the climate crisis that exists across the country.”

At the same time as Bennet, six other senators became members. The membership is evenly split between Republican and Democratically-affiliated officials.

In October, two U.S. senators – Chris Coons, D-Del., and Mike Braun, R-Ind. – formed the group with the intent of adding more members.

NBC news reported at the time that the group would meet with climate scientists, businesses, and policy experts, adopting ideas only if the decisions were unanimous. The founding senators did not take a position on the Green New Deal, a progressive proposal that aims to enact economic justice and promote clean energy infrastructure.

The U.S. House of Representatives also has a bipartisan climate caucus, of which Rep. Ed Perlmutter is the only Colorado member.

Bennet’s announcement comes three days after President Donald Trump formally announced that the United States will withdraw from the Paris Agreement on reducing carbon emissions in November, an agreement that the overwhelming majority of countries is party to.
