Former Attorney General Cynthia Coffman has endorsed the expansion of Colorado statute of limitation’s to allow child sex abuse victims more time to sue.

Victim advocates and at least one state legislator already support the policy change following last week’s report that Catholic priests in Colorado likely abused at least 166 children from 1950 to 1998.

The Colorado Sun reports that Coffman also would like to see the General Assembly expand the powers of the attorney general to pursue criminal investigations.

“I think there are a number of indicators that there is a broader conspiracy to hide the truth of what happened to these and other victims,” she told The Sun.

Coffman negotiated a voluntary handing over of church documents for former U.S. Attorney Robert Troyer to analyze. His investigation began in February under current Attorney General Phil Weiser and culminated in last week’s report.

Coffman told The Sun that she talked to then-Gov. John Hickenlooper about her suspicions of clergy abuse but never explicitly asked him to authorize an investigation. Hickenlooper’s Senate campaign confirmed to the Sun that the attorney general didn’t ask him to approve a state probe.

Weiser said last week that despite no criminal process commencing, Troyer’s report would receive updates, and more victims are encouraged to come forward in the interim. Coffman agreed that the report was a “first step” that could lead to further investigation.
