Neguse welcomes inaugural Youth Advisory Council
U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Boulder, has formed a Youth Advisory Council of 40 high school students from his district.
The students are from Loveland, Fort Collins, Niwot, Boulder, Edwards, Granby and Bailey. They will serve through May 2020.
“These bright minds are the future of our state and our nation, and they deserve to have a say in the political landscape we are creating for them,” Neguse said in a statement.
The council’s first meeting is this Saturday. Subsequently, there will be monthly meetings at different locations around the district. Guest speakers will attend, and students will talk to Neguse about their preferred issues.
At the end of their term, the students will organize a youth summit on a topic they choose.
While multiple members of Congress formed similar groups, Rep. Ed Perlmutter, D-Golden, appears to be the only one from Colorado with a Youth Advisory Council.
A spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment, but Perlmutter’s website indicates that up to 20 students may join. Perlmutter participates “when his schedule allows” and the members “help develop ideas for federal policy.”
Although his House of Representatives website is since defunct, Gov. Jared Polis, when he held Neguse’s seat prior to 2019, also formed an advisory council.
“The YAC meets regularly during the school year to discuss issues and current events,” he posted on Facebook in 2016.
