Gray wolf sighting confirmed in northern Colorado
FORT COLLINS – Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed Wednesday that an animal photographed in northern Colorado was a gray wolf from a Wyoming pack.
The Coloradoan reported Tuesday that someone sent the agency a photo showing what appeared to be a radio-collared wolf near Walden in Jackson County.
“The collared wolf is from the Snake River pack and was last recorded by transmission signals on February 12 during routine telemetry flights around South Pass,” CPW said in a statement Wednesday.
Biologists still are trying to confirm another recent sighting just to the south in Grand County.
Gray wolves were native to Colorado but were hunted to near extinction by the 1940s. Wyoming is one of several states where the wolf has been reintroduced.
Previously, the last confirmed Colorado wolf sightings were near Walden in 2015.
In all, there are about 6,000 gray wolves in the Northern Rockies, Pacific Northwest and Western Great Lakes.
