A handful of left-leaning groups is sponsored a picnic and forum Sunday afternoon to present the wide field of candidates planning to run for U.S. Senate next year, and most Democrats in the race are expected to appear.

The event is from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at Barnum Park, at 360 West Hooker St. in Denver.

The incumbent, Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, was invited but hasn’t responded, organizers said Friday.

The event is sponsored by Indivisible Denver, Indivisible Front Range Resistance, Indivisible Colorado Environment, Indivisible Highlands Ranch, Indivisible CD6, Indivisible Arapahoe and ProgressNow Colorado.

Candidates expected to attend are:

• Andrew Romanoff
• Stephany Rose Spaulding
• John Walsh

One candidate who will not be in attendance is one who has been working on the race the longest, Superior scientist Trish Zornio.

She is caring for her parents, who were injured when the motorcycle they were on was hit by a car in Maine on May 27.

During the event, the Senate candidates will draw questions from a basket.

The issues are expected to include immigration, gun reform, reproductive rights, health care and the Green New Deal, organizers said.

 “Our intention with this event is to raise awareness of the upcoming U.S. Senate election,” Tania Van Pelt of Indivisible Denver said in a statement. “We want to get Coloradans engaged with the candidates and issues that matter to all of us, so we can make an informed decision in the coming election year.”

Those who attend the picnic should bring their own food and drinks.
