The Colorado General Assembly is back in session, and the issues that lawmakers are grappling with this year loom as high as the Rockies.

How can we keep Coloradans on the move as more people and businesses crowd the state? How do we corral runaway health care costs? How can all corners of Colorado share in the state’s economic growth? Where will the money come from to keep schools and colleges thriving? How can energy development and communities co-exist?

Those and many other questions will be debated under the gilded dome of the state Capitol over the next few months.

After a blue wave swept over the state in the 2018 elections, Democrats now control both houses of the state legislature, as well as every statewide office. With a period of divided power at the statehouse now in the rear-view mirror, many Democratic lawmakers see an opportunity to pursue a progressive vision for the state – and their Republican colleagues are cautioning against overreach.

We’ll soon see whether a spirit of collaboration between the parties will reign at the Capitol, or whether Democrats will seek to go their own way and Republicans will try to apply the brakes.
