Origins: Colorado’s first territorial legislature met in Denver on Sept. 9, 1861. After Colorado became a state in 1876, the first Colorado General Assembly convened on Nov. 1, 1876.

Legislators: There are 35 senators serving four-year terms and 65 representatives serving two-year terms. Senators represent an average of 144,000 people each and representatives an average of 77,000 each.

Qualifications: A candidate for the General Assembly must be at least 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen, and a resident of the district he or she wishes to represent for at least 12 months before the election.

Term limits: Lawmakers are limited to serving eight consecutive years in each chamber.

Salaries: Lawmakers whose terms began before January 2019 are paid $30,000 per year. Those whose terms began January 2019 are paid $40,242 per year.

The Capitol: The building, designed by Elijah E. Myers, was built from 1886 to 1903 at a cost of $3 million. The granite used in the exterior walls was quarried near Gunnison; the yule marble floors were quarried in the town of Marble.

Capitol tours: Free public tours are offered hourly weekdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. You’re advised to arrive at least 20 minutes early. Reservations are not necessary for groups under 10 people. You can also access the building on your own, but the Capitol dome can be visited only on a guided tour. The Capitol is closed on weekends and most federal holidays.
