Western State Colorado University alters school name

GRAND JUNCTION – Western State Colorado University has dropped “state” from its name as part of an unofficial rebranding.

The Daily Sentinel reports the university in Gunnison quietly made the alteration this fall with little public notice.

The state Legislature is required to approve name changes of Colorado’s public universities. The school received such approval in 2012 when it changed from Western State College.

Western State President Greg Salsbury says in an email that the school did not seek state approval because “it’s not really a change so much as a simplification and alignment.”

Salsbury says students, alumni and others have long referred to the school as simply Western or Western Colorado University.
