The Colorado Association of Realtors has named its legislators of the year.

They are Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, and Reps. Matt Gray, D-Broomfield; Mike Weissman, D-Aurora; and Terri Carver, R-Colorado Springs its legislators of the year.

It is the second year in a row Gray has received the award for supporting Realtors’ issues. The association cited his work on House Bill 1227 last session to fix a 2017 bill on the renewal date for real estate licenses and inadequate educational opportunities.

“Our legislative policy committee, comprised of members throughout the state of Colorado, has carefully considered this decision and believes that a legislator whose approachability and eagerness to help clean up policy that will provide Realtors across the state access to fulfill continuing education requirements and ultimately improve real estate practices is a champion for the industry,” Ann Hayes, who chairs the association, said in a statement.

“As members of the Realtor community, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Rep. Gray for his devotion to Colorado and support for Realtor priority issues.”

Gardner and Weissman “equally played major roles” in the passage of Senate Bill 15 to curb squatters in unoccupied homes. The legislation was titled Protecting Homeowners and Deployed Military.

“Prior to the passage of this bill, in many cases, families returned home from a vacation to find unauthorized occupants living in their home and, as a result, had to spend time and money on lengthy eviction proceedings to remove squatters from the property,” the association said in an announcement of the awards.

Carver helped protect consumer data privacy as lawmakers the last two sessions have considered legislation to allow remote notarization, the association said.

Carver “listened to the Realtor community and worked tirelessly to ensure consumer data privacy would be protected in the waning days of session,” the association said. “Negotiations with the proponents broke down late in the session and the bill died on the calendar, but CAR continues to work on this important issue with Rep.Carver.”
