Energy company scales back plans for drilling near Rocky Flats
A Boulder County town says an oil and gas company is withdrawing its application for some of the wells it wanted to drill near a former nuclear weapons plant south of Boulder.
The Boulder Daily Camera reports that Highlands Natural Resources Corp. told the town of Superior it would cancel its plans to drill wells near the northeast corner of the former Rocky Flats plant. The site is within the town’s boundaries.
Highlands has a separate application pending to drill on another site near the western boundary of Rocky Flats. A state website said Tuesday that application was on hold, and the company’s plans weren’t immediately clear.
Rocky Flats manufactured plutonium triggers for nuclear bombs. After a $7 billion cleanup, most of the site became a national wildlife refuge.
